Semi Permanent Brows Aftercare: My Day-by-Day Guide

Why aftercare decides the final result

The procedure itself is the easier half of getting clean semi permanent brows. Two hours, careful work, immediate result. What you see when you walk out of my Kirkham studio is dramatic and good-looking, frankly too dramatic, because it darkens to roughly forty percent of what you see by the time it settles.

Aftercare is what determines whether you end up with crisp, evenly retained brows or patchy fade in the wrong places.

This guide is calendar days, not vague phases. Specific rather than generic.

Day 0 to 24 hours: the critical window

The first day is when skin chemistry decides whether pigment retention will be even or uneven across the brow.

For the first eight hours after your appointment, do nothing. No water, no product, no touching, and no makeup anywhere near the brow. Your skin is producing lymph as part of normal healing, and rubbing or wetting will pull pigment out of the cells before it has set.

After eight hours and before bed, gently blot the brow area with a fresh sterile cotton pad to remove any residual lymph. Do not wipe. Do not rub. Press, lift, repeat across the brow. Apply a tiny smear of the aftercare balm I provide, a pinhead amount per brow, not a layer.

Sleep on your back if you can manage it. Pillow contact and fresh pigment do not mix on day one.

Days 2 to 7: the gentle daily routine

This is the week your brows look strongest. Pigment is sitting in the upper skin layer, the colour reads slightly darker than the final result, and the skin underneath is closing up.

Your daily routine for these days:

  • Wash your face around the brows using a clean fingertip and a non-foaming cleanser, never directly on the brow.
  • Pat the brow area dry with a clean tissue, never a towel.
  • Apply the aftercare balm sparingly twice a day, morning and evening.
  • Avoid makeup on or around the brow.
  • Avoid sweating heavily in saunas, gyms, hot baths, or direct sun exposure.
  • Sleep on your back or your side, not face-down on the pillow.

If you notice small flakes appearing on the brow during this week, do not pick them. They will release naturally between days four and seven. Picking them takes pigment with them and creates the patchy fade that no client actually wants.

Week 2: the awkward fade phase

This is the week most clients message me asking if something has gone wrong. Nothing has gone wrong. This is normal.

In week two, the dark surface pigment lifts away with the natural skin shed. Your brows look lighter, sometimes patchy, sometimes uneven, occasionally with one section that hasn’t lifted as fast as the rest. People who only saw the work in week one panic at this stage. It is the most common time clients lose their nerve.

Hold the line. The colour is still settling into the deeper layer where it belongs. What you see in week two is not the final result.

You can resume light makeup elsewhere on the face, but keep the brow itself product-free except for the aftercare balm. Light cleansing around the brow is fine. You can sweat moderately, but still avoid heavy sauna or steam exposure.

Weeks 3 and 4: settling in

By the start of week three, your brows are entering the final colour. They look softer and more natural than they did in week one, and that is intentional, and that is what we want.

You can resume your full skincare routine, normal exercise, and saunas if you like.

Avoid retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other acid-based exfoliants directly on the brow area for the next two months. These ingredients accelerate pigment fade. If you use them in your wider routine, work around the brow zone.

Avoid sunbeds entirely. Use SPF 30 or higher on the brow area whenever you are outside, even on cloudy days. Sun is the single biggest cause of premature pigment fade.

By the end of week four, what you see is approximately the final result.

Six weeks: the touch-up question

I book a complimentary touch-up session at six to eight weeks for every semi permanent brows client. This is built into the original appointment fee and is not a separate upsell.

The touch-up addresses any small areas where pigment did not retain evenly during healing. It is brief, usually thirty to forty five minutes, and it is the difference between brows that look ninety percent perfect and brows that look entirely settled.

Please attend the touch-up even if you think your brows look fine. Small evenness gaps are easier to correct now than at the twelve-month refresh.

What to avoid throughout the four weeks

A short list of things to keep away from for the full healing period:

  • Hot tubs, steam rooms, saunas, and very hot showers (until end of week three).
  • Long submersion in pools or the sea.
  • Direct sun on the brow without SPF.
  • Sunbeds, period.
  • Glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinoids, and other acid-based exfoliants on or near the brow.
  • Picking, scratching, rubbing, or pulling at the brow at any stage.
  • Sleeping face down for the first ten days.

These are the practical guardrails. Anything else, contact me and I will tell you whether it matters for your specific situation.

If you have questions during your healing or notice anything that does not look right, message me directly rather than waiting for the next appointment. A quick photo and a short message is usually enough for me to advise. A Skin Analysis appointment is also available if you want to discuss the wider picture of how your skin is healing.

Questions & Answers

After eight hours, you can clean around the brow area gently with a clean fingertip and a non-foaming cleanser, avoiding direct contact with the brow itself. Direct washing on the brow is fine after day three. Until day seven, pat dry rather than rubbing, and use a clean tissue not a towel. From week two onward, your normal cleansing routine resumes around the brow with the brow itself still kept product-free.

Light walking and gentle activity are fine from day two. Heavy sweating, hot yoga, intense gym sessions, and saunas should wait until the end of week three. Heat and moisture during the healing phase can lift pigment unevenly. Wait the three weeks; the trade is worth it for retention.

It is not a disaster, but it can affect retention. If you accidentally get the brow wet during the first day, gently blot dry with a clean cotton pad and apply a tiny smear of aftercare balm. If repeated wetting happens through week one, message me with a photo and I will assess whether anything needs adjusting at the touch-up appointment.

This is normal and almost universal. Surface pigment lifts away with the natural skin shed in week two, and the deeper pigment that determines the final result is still settling. The colour returns by week three and finalises by the end of week four. Lighter areas at week two are not a problem if you avoid picking and let the natural process complete.

Yes, and it is included in your original price. The touch-up at six to eight weeks addresses any small areas where pigment did not retain evenly during healing. It is brief, comfortable, and is the difference between brows that look almost right and brows that look fully settled. Please attend even if you think your brows look fine.

Most clients see a clean result that holds for twelve to eighteen months before a colour refresh becomes useful. Skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and skincare ingredients all affect retention. Clients who use sunbeds or strong acid-based exfoliants on or near the brow tend to see fade earlier; clients who use SPF consistently and avoid acids near the brow see longer retention.
