Does blue led light therapy actually help acne?

Accepted Answer

For mild, non-inflammatory acne the clinical evidence base behind blue light at around 415 nanometres is well documented as a supportive tool. It is not a replacement for prescription treatment, and it does not work for moderate or severe acne. In my Kirkham studio I run blue LED courses for clients whose home routine is gentle and whose acne is mild - and I refer anyone with cystic or scarring acne to their GP first.

Question 2

How many blue LED sessions will I need?

A typical course is six to eight sessions over three to four weeks, then a maintenance session every two to four weeks for as long as breakouts are still settling. I would rather you start with a short course, see what your skin does, and decide on the next step from data than commit to twelve sessions on the phone.

Question 3

Can blue led light therapy replace my GP medication?

Accepted Answer

No. Blue LED is a supportive tool, not a substitute for medication. If your GP has prescribed topical or oral treatment, the LED sits alongside that, not instead of it. If you are unsure whether to start, finish, or change any prescribed treatment, the conversation belongs with your GP, not with me.

Question 4

Is blue led safe for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin?

Blue LED at clinical wavelengths is generally well tolerated, and goggles are worn through every session in my studio. For sensitive or rosacea-prone skin I am more cautious - the first session is shorter, we watch how the skin responds for two or three days, and I adjust the protocol from there. Some skin types are better suited to red and near-infrared LED rather than blue, and the consultation is where we work that out.

Question 5

Will my acne look worse before it looks better?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, yes. The first session or two can briefly bring small breakouts to the surface as the skin re-balances. That settles within a few days and is part of how the skin clears, not a sign that the treatment is failing. If after the first three or four sessions I do not think blue LED is helping, I will tell you and we will change course.

Question 6

Can I have blue LED if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are not blanket contraindications for non-laser LED at clinical wavelengths, but I take a cautious view in the studio. I prefer to wait until after pregnancy for any non-essential course, and during breastfeeding we discuss it on a case-by-case basis. If you have any active prescription or dermatology plan during pregnancy, defer to your GP first.
